Kongs ready for the freezer

Kongs ready for the freezer

Kongs have become a commonly seen item around our home for many years now. I usually make up a few with a variety of foods and many times freeze them. I use them to occupy my dogs time when I am going to be busy or on those days the weather is bad and we can not go for our walk. When someone gets a new puppy I usually give a puppy gift bag with a Kong and a can of squeeze cheese  among the other yummy foods. Baylor, who would not eat a Kong until the age of 3, now brings me empty ones lying around the house, throws them in my lap in hopes of getting them stuffed again.

I was thinking last night about Kongs(I know sounds weird but dog people will understand) and wandered if there were some fun recipes on the web for stuffing Kongs and how folks cleaned them after the dogs were done.

Kongs around here are usually stuffed with some yogurt, bananas, blueberry’s, treats, peanut butter, and squeeze cheese. If I am organized I will freeze them. If I am in a hurry, well it is a free for all:).

At first I was cleaning my Kongs by soaking them in hot water, scrubbing the inside out with a baby bottle cleaner, and letting them dry on the counter. Then when we moved to our new home I had a dishwasher so I put them on the top rack. This has worked well. When I was at the vet the other day I picked up a couple new Kongs, in a fancy blue color, and the Vet Tech told me she throws hers in the washer.

After doing a search on the web I found many Kong recipe sites. Here is one with some good Kong recipes. This site even has a diagram of a stuffed Kong with recipes. The official Kong website has recipes too.

Park and Bark Awhile is having its first free giveaway, a new Kong. Leave me a comment describing what is your favorite Kong stuffing recipe and how you clean them. I will draw the winner on Wednesday October 1st.
