Kongs have become a commonly seen item around our home for many years now. I usually make up a few with a variety of foods and many times freeze them. I use them to occupy my dogs time when I am going to be busy or on those days the weather is bad and we can not go for our walk. When someone gets a new puppy I usually give a puppy gift bag with a Kong and a can of squeeze cheese among the other yummy foods. Baylor, who would not eat a Kong until the age of 3, now brings me empty ones lying around the house, throws them in my lap in hopes of getting them stuffed again.
I was thinking last night about Kongs(I know sounds weird but dog people will understand) and wandered if there were some fun recipes on the web for stuffing Kongs and how folks cleaned them after the dogs were done.
Kongs around here are usually stuffed with some yogurt, bananas, blueberry’s, treats, peanut butter, and squeeze cheese. If I am organized I will freeze them. If I am in a hurry, well it is a free for all:).
At first I was cleaning my Kongs by soaking them in hot water, scrubbing the inside out with a baby bottle cleaner, and letting them dry on the counter. Then when we moved to our new home I had a dishwasher so I put them on the top rack. This has worked well. When I was at the vet the other day I picked up a couple new Kongs, in a fancy blue color, and the Vet Tech told me she throws hers in the washer.
After doing a search on the web I found many Kong recipe sites. Here is one with some good Kong recipes. This site even has a diagram of a stuffed Kong with recipes. The official Kong website has recipes too.
Park and Bark Awhile is having its first free giveaway, a new Kong. Leave me a comment describing what is your favorite Kong stuffing recipe and how you clean them. I will draw the winner on Wednesday October 1st.

Oooh great post, Morph hasn’t had his kong in a while so I may have to dig it out this weekend and give him a treat!!
I think Morph’s favourite recipe would have to be 2 slices of cheese stuffed in and then popped in the microwave to melt it…then peanut butter smeared around the inside and a handful of cut up hotdog in for good measure. Then another little bit of cheese on the top and bottom and in the microwave again to melt it and make sure it doesn’t all fall out!!
And the best way to clean them…well just let Morph’s tongue do the work haha! But for those awkward bits he can’t reach then I just use an old toothbrush!

My Kong is usually filled with some kibble them sealed with peanut butter. I like the idea of a frozen one though.

Mine certainly love peanut butter filled or a frozen chicken broth filling. Not sure which they like best. Its certainly a toss up. The peanut butter one is easier to clean the floors up after. They leave NO specs of peanut butter behind
I have a high powered sprayer in the kitchen sink that cleans up the Kong very nicely or I will use a tooth brush to get the hard to remove bits of caked on peanut butter off.
